The Phaerian Sucker Punch

It would seem that we forced the Phaerian's hand and They responded by attempting to destroy what they wanted to gain by a silent takeover. Their plan was audacious and should have worked as they had planned. We did not win this exchange by strategic superiority. It was a matter of luck. Perhaps I am too harsh in my assessment. Without our planning and quick thinking of our people we would all be screwed. Rhynoa would be destroyed and we would have been forced to flee ill prepared for the near future. Kudos to Major Magoo, Dr von Shwantz, Cmdr O'Brien, the crew of the Victory and our Iddry and Gendauw allies.

O'Brien has back tracked and established the launch points for the attack. His immediate reaction was for a strike to neutralize any threat. Initially I was of the same opinion. However on second thought I believe a more measured response is needed. We know Phaerians can use mind control to force people to do their will. Most likely the perpetrators had no knowledge of their actions. We can't lay waste to highly populated areas to kill enemies who in all probability are no longer on the planet. We do need to investigate the explosion on the surface ASAP. It appears to be a trap to lure us into the blast zone. The only reason our expeditionary force survived was due to the presence of an Iddry elder who mitigated the damage.

Orders are as follows:

  • Security Section: I am placing you under command of Cmdr O'Brien. Please give him your full support. We need to be on guard.
  • Diplomatic Team, proof and recheck both the Articles of Confederation, the Petition for USFC Membership, Conference notes and presentations based on attack. work with Communication team to get the conference scheduled for Feb 14, 2386 12:00. Please contact the commander of the Niad to bring an assistant and attend the conference. He will need a per-confrence briefing to bring him up to speed on the current situation.
  • All departments full status reports ASAP
  • Maintenance: Status on repairs of wave rider and progress on key projects
  • Communication team: I need all updates from Echolynn base.
  • We need to test the RABOD field system ASAP.
  • Team Atum: please do a final sweep and prepare for my arrival in an hour.
  • XO to the bridge, You have the con, notify me ASAP if needed.

To the crew of the Victory. No captain of a vessel could be prouder of a crew's service in times of crisis than I am of you. Never have we faced a situation so dire and important. You are my family and I shall never forget it. I will be forced to lead us all into danger, but I will never make you sacrifice in vain. This I swear on my life and honor. We stand on the brink of a new era and we shall not fail. To do otherwise is not an option.

Rescue Mission

Today is the day. A day of celebration for all of Rhynoa and our effort to keep this planet free. Two hundred years ago I tossed out a message in a bottle and it has come back in the form of a legend. Long ago the Nyad launched in an ill-fated mission to the doomed planet Trispephane. During a time space journey back to That last day for Trispephane, we spotted the Nyad in shut down mode slowly moving toward destruction.

On the return trip we were able to establish contact with the automated flight systems and turn the Nyad around Their new heading was to bring them into near orbit with the gas giant after a two hundred year journey. Orders were changed to wake the crew during the last years of the trip. I had programed two robots of the same type on-board with all the information needed when they return home. Louie and Dewie performed flawlessly. During the last few days of their flight our long range scans showed it was under attack. Databases confirmed the raiders were operated by one of the slave states under control of the Phaerian Empire. As the Nyad races toward the Hectora system it steadily drops homing mines. These seem to have no effect on the shields of their pursuers.

I was on my way to my meeting with Atum when the Caxton sounded and I was called to the bridge. Reports were coming in on the situation and the course of action was clear. I called for status reports and ordered immediate launch and warp jump into the running fight. Navi reports a 2 minute ETA, Weapons control nominal, shields max, running like a bat out of hell.

I hail the Nyad and offer assistance. I can tell the captain recognizes me from the data archive. He smiles and we exchange names. He welcomes us and I give him our ETA. A squadron of Gendauw robotic ships are trailing behind. They will not be able to close to battle but will offer support as we near Rhynoa.

I have to admit he has guts if not tactical sense. During the running fight he turns and scores a broadside which cripples one of the pursuing raiders. Unfortunately the second raider hits the Nyad with a plasma vortex weapon which strips off his side shield and penetrates the hull. Damage reports flow in, bulkheads closed, damage sustainable

The seconds crawl by and I order rolling fire as soon as a weapon system comes in range. Slowly my shots take down their shields and I refuse to let him go. The raider disengages and attempts to flee. The hull begins to glow and the ship is motionless. scans show it is pushing hard to escape the pounding from the Victory, but it is unable to get away..

A new voice is coming through the com unit. It is Dr. von Schwanz aboard the Enciviar. He is attempting to get the crippled ships to surrender. In reply the face of unknown alien species appears and snarls at us. It raises it's fist and the screen goes blank. Twin explosions mark the last location of the crippled raiders. As with their masters no secrets will be discovered.

Messages have been sent to the people of Rhynoa about the return of the Nyad. As planed every transmitter capable of reaching them sends greetings and a welcome home to long lost heroes. I get a message of thanks from the captain. He is still processing the whole situation. I tell him it looks like he could use a drink and come on board when he can, we have a lot to talk about He is home again and his ship carry's the bounty of life nearly destroyed in the great war so long ago. Yes the Age of Miracles has not passed.

The Nyad's course is laid in for Echolynn base. Repairs have top priority. All scans of the Phaerian raiders is being sent to central archives. Victory is taking up orbit of Rhynoa and continuing rescue missions and coordinating communications with the surface. I am issuing commendations to the crew of the Victory in battle. We have drawn first blood in our fight for survival..

Hopefully I will make it through my meeting with Atum and then shower, eat and sleep. The Victory is running smoothly and the crew is frosty. X-O you have the con, Yamashita signing off.

Medical Log Feb 13, 2386

Mission Log: Medical Department, Dr. Asham Rashid, CDR, UFSC, (temp. commission)

[Feb 13, 2386 15:31] (Sec Lev 9), Loc: Echolynn Base, New Baeldra (Rhynoa), Estimated Safe Launch Window Time: T-311 hr

Medical Personnel - Asham Rashid, M.D., Chief Surgeon,

·        Peter Von Schwanz, Psy. D., CDR, UFSC

·        Gendry Hollis, M.D., M.D.E (Medical Engineer)

·        Karen Robson, M.D.

·        Michael 'Mick' Lochrist, M.D.

It has been some time since I've taken a break to catch up on notes. Much has been going on, barely leaving time for mandatory rest periods, let alone performing proper documentation. In fact, things have been so chaotic that I've had to place numerous crewmen (particularly in Security) in "not-fit-for-duty" status to ensure that they had at least a bare minimum of sleep.

Upon our arrival at Echolynn Base, we were nearly immediately in contact with hostile sentients. Between cloaked assassins and mental and physical attacks by beings later determined to be Phaeran in nature, much good data has no doubt been lost.

Still, I will here attempt to capture such information as I can best recall, for the official record.

During the attacks, and lacking any clear knowledge, the xeno-literature being particularly thin on this topic, I concocted a broad-spectrum soporific, loaded charged hypodermics with it, and found it to be quite efficacious in quickly bringing a cloaked assassin who had invaded sick bay, rapidly into a state of unconsciousness. I have labeled this blend as NK-22. During the encounter with hostile Phaeran in the landing docks, I replicated two compressed liquid cylinders filled with NK-22, connected them to the ship's ventilation system, and found the mixture to also be effective against any of these attackers who had not yet raised a personal shield. The mixture is odorless, tasteless, and largely invisible save as a white fog immediately upon its release from the canister. The fog quickly dissipates as it expands. Time of effect varies slightly between sentient species, but was observed to be typically in the 1-3 minute range, with effects lasting up to 10 hours, per dose. Since then, additional canisters and hypodermics have been prepared and distributed to the Security Department, and others as requested, while maintaining sufficient stock close to hand in sick bay.

In the aftermath of the attacks, most available beds were filled. We have treated 32 crewmen and women, and have 3, including the Captain of UFSC Thucydides, in cryo. Some of the crewmen have been released (must remember to query Dr. Lochrist as to how many).

One item of particular note, resulting from the use of NK-22 during the attack was that we were able to recover two of the Phaeran attackers and immediately place them into cryo. Having researched the available literature, it appears that this may not ever have occurred previously. This gave us the very unusual, to say the least, opportunity to analyze blood samples from the subjects. They were all found to contain seven different sub-types of nano-biological autonomous robotic entities, which will be hereafter referred to as "nano-bots" or "nanites". For lack of better terminology, we have termed them Types A-G, and have been doing our best to determine their properties. Those appear to be as follows;

A. Reacts to the Phaeran equivalent of adrenaline, and emits a standing Alpha wave. Does not appear to be affected by exposure to EMP.

B. Jomm had some information on this one, believing it to be associated with a kind of phase shift. It is affected by exposure to EMP.

C. Exposure to N-Tridial causes this one to emit both heat and light. S-Tridial similar but to less effect. It does not appear to be affected by exposure to EMP.

D. Function unknown, but upon testing my own blood to see whether I might have become accidentally contaminated, found that this one was present. Upon testing other crew, found there to be a widespread contamination with Type D. Using phages extracted from the blood of LCDR Virgil, synthesized a counter-agent capable of neutralizing Type D, and inoculated all Terrans and Rhynoans. Those recovered from Rhynoa also appear to be coming onboard already infected. Subsequent testing has proved negative, but all such persons have been placed on weekly monitoring. This type appears to be affected by EMP. One possible function of this Type might be to make the carrier both contagious and more susceptible to attack or control by a Phaeran with one or more of the other Types. Testing continues.

E. In matrix, acts as a kind of biological Beta-storage. Is affected by EMP.

F. Noted that deceased Phaeran very quickly begin to decompose, resulting in a gas and little more. Type F remains and may be the active agent promoting such rapid decomposition. This Type appears unaffected by EMP.

G. No data with the exception of the fact that it appears to be unaffected by EMP.

Have been provided information that the Jango Brothers have some information on nanites in general. Future plans include discussions with them. Also of importance is that some individuals seem to have natural immunity, including LCDR Steve Virgil, Science Officer of UFSC Thucydides. (note to self, submit commendation recommendation for LCDR Virgil whose efforts in support of the medical mission while we had mass casualties and little staff beyond myself and two Medical Assistants, were essential to the mission's survival. He also conducted much of the experimentation on the nanites.)

Attended during the recent Black-Enciviar run after first briefing Dr. Robson of my intent upon return to attempt removal from cryogenic suspension, and emergency surgical repair upon the Captain, including sub-neural patching. Karen performed wonderfully in terms of having the surgery and the Captain well prepared upon my return. Dr. Von Schwanz was able to perform some rudimentary communications with the Captain prior to his full resuscitation. Little was learned, but we seem to have his approval for this attempt. Peter has agreed to observe during surgery. I will operate with Karen's close assistance and advice. Scans indicate that we will be required to perform moderate to significant dendrite-patch and reconstruction to fill in gaps in the neural network. Peter has had some experience dealing with patients who have been through this, and his input should be invaluable, particularly in regards to post-op rehabilitation. Peter will also remain in the communication net during the surgery. Karen and I will not, to eliminate potential distractions. We have requested the presence of four armed guards dressed in power suits to protect the surgery during this effort, and Security has responded favorably.

Finally, Kit has been requesting I produce a compound capable of extending organism health through extended periods without rest. While I can certainly provide a nutrient supplement, I have misgivings about incorporating the capability of greatly extending performance and no-sleep, beyond what is done with common battle drugs. As is well known, the "crash" following the normal 120 hour maximum usage of such drugs typically requires nearly forty-eight straight hours of sleep. Kip seems to be interested in being able to use this compound indefinitely. Going beyond the usual 5 day maximum would make death a real, and likely outcome. An extended period of delusion would be a near certainty. We shall have to discuss this further as events allow.

Squire Message to Peter von Swantz [sec lev 14]

Peter, read and give me your feedback...BTW please do not freak out when I do what I do. Atoom is a cream-puff. He may be scum, but he can be our scum. He is very good at the game I give him that. BTW please get security to sweep the Palm 20 etc for surveillance devices. One thing I learned is Atoom has had us under an unblinking eye and has been busy building his own dossiers. I think you will agree this is unacceptable. But with proper handling I think he will roll over and play nice doggie. If not I can damp all power sources in Jenko for a couple hours to remind Atoom who is in charge. He is an opportunist and he thinks we can provide opportunities. //attached atoom/yamashita-01-1

Suggestions

Of the two planets most favorable for the targeted jump exchange my vote is for the target in Utosian space. We have already sent a warning to evacuate. Changing targets and issuing new warnings could be fatal for any personnel on that planet.

The rescued personnel from the Thucydides should be be assigned as quickly as possible to section officers. Whether they will work on base or the Victory is a matter of the section officer's discretion.

Medical Personnel - Dr. Asham Rashid
  • Gendry Hollis, M.D., M.D.E (Medical Engineer)
  • Karen Robson, M.D.
  • Michael 'Mick' Lochrist, M.D.
Psychological Personnel - Dr. Peter von Swantz
  • Lucas Gannon
  • Simon Lafferty

  • Galis Moiraine Optics Technician, specifically EHTOU-class.

Updates

The rescue of the Strango brothers and retrieval of the Phaerian casualties on the incoming freighter is imperative.

Communications with the existing population are coming in and a new update on the situation is needed ASAP. All communications from the surface should be handled by the communication team on-board the Victory. Their translator files for the different Rhynoan languages so it should be a simple matter. I have tasked the Victory to teleport delegations on-board and make facilities available for the conference. Security procedures will be handled by our security chief Markus O'Brian. I presume in addition to testing representatives to rule out Phaerian operatives nanite and weapon scans will be in effect. The conference will be short, however it is necessary for the ongoing diplomatic mission. I will be attending the conference with representatives of the Genduw and Idree. This will also allow transporting the "package" to the Victory where it can be delivered to base.
Please keep me apprised of any new events.

Mission Log: Kitsune Yamashita

[Feb 12, 2386 15:15:47] (Sec Lev 12)

Loc: Victory New Baeldra Rhynoa

Estimated Safe Launch Window Time: T-311 hr

Work progresses on the Gendaow part of the grand solution. Arrangements have been made to begin tests and interrogations by the Gendaow. I have discovered the existence of a lost group of Gendaow survivors who escaped Baeldra during the Phaerian Genocide. There is hope that the species can rebuild a viable civilization on a new home world.

One thing bothers me. Hidden in the specifications of the Chiamera drive briefing I see a potential danger. There are safety measures which will protect the Terrans, however without the help of the Idree we may well save the planet but doom the inhabitants to death or at least serious cellular damage. I am forwarding data to Tyrecies and Dr. Rashid. I a now discussing the issue with Modayah and Idree. I think we have the key to the problem.

The Secret of the Idree

We know during the nuclear war on Rhynoa the casualty rate was dramatically lower than any optimistic projection we can make. From records it appears the Idree were able to save the planet in those dark days. I am taking Ardree home to see if they can help save the population of Rhynoa once again.

Military Madness

Transmissions from the Base are cause for worry. Ever since we arrived the military has attempted to pervert our mission into a military exercise and a treasure hunt for more shiny toys to kill people easier. Che has exhibited extremely erratic behavior and judgement. I do not think he has the best interest of the expedition in mind. This is a worry since he has seized control of the most dangerous technologies we have found on Rhynoa.

I am left with no choice but to formally request a psyche evaluation of major Magoo to determine his ability to exercise command. Formal notice has been sent to both Dr. von Swantz and command of the Victory.(Sec Lev 13)

On arriving at our destination it is not difficult to be amazed. Ardree has not stopped gawking since we got here. I can't blame him one bit. Our hosts are friendly and hospitable. We ate together and though my hosts speak English well I find we drop into telepathic conversation while we eat. Modyah has what looks like a major piece in the puzzle we face. How do we move a planet, the orbiting satellites and the asteroid belt including our new found base. It is a cylinder 2 meters high and 1.25 meters in diameter. It can be tied into the sphere to aid generating a well defined and stable field for the Chimera drive transfer. Specifications will be made available to Tyriceus ASP.

I am attempting to get some tests run to see if we can eradicate the Phaerian ninites all our human crew have been infected with. As noted concentration of for Victory crew is dramatically higher than levels of the crew of the Thucydides. I will forward logs to our Chief Medical Officer on the base.

I have much to do and little time. I plan on getting the gift back to the base with all haste and then I have to give a kid a ride home. The Iddree need to be informed and convinced they must save their planet one more time. The pieces are falling in place and the puzzle is coming closer to completion.

People of Rhynoa. I am speaking to you as a bearer of terrible news and bright hope. The bad news is your planet will cease to exist due to a destructive wave front rapidly moving toward your world. Data shows impact will occur in 24 rotations of your world.

I am sending all collected information to each government and population centers. Please examine them in detail. We must all work together to save your planet and people. Contact us for any further information and any observations.

It is important we hold a conference to coordinate this effort. For too long your people have been divided and in need of healing. In the coming crisis internal conflict has no place. I await your response and look forward to working with you all in this time of danger.
